What is a book? In partnership with RISD Special Collections, this exhibition investigates the complex boundaries of the modern book.

Where do we draw the line between a book and not a book?
By showcasing unconventional works from the Fleet Library, we invite viewers to examine the way a book’s material, size, format, and form influence how we read and process information. From pop-up books to sculptural objects, This is a Book? challenges traditional definitions and dissects how these radical forms communicate information in ways their standard counterparts cannot.

Rethinking Design:
Because the exhibits are fixed within glass cases, we transformed the glass into an active interface, shifting engagement from physical touch to a narrative choreography of sight. We constructed a three-shelf framework across the site-specific displays, driven by the linguistic inquiry: This is a book / Is this a book? / Is a book this? To guide this experience, we designed a system of vinyl typographic cues on the glass that functions as spatial way-finding and a colorful visual anchor for the inquiry.
