Free Font* Manifesto
Editorial, Web, UI/UX
Nov 2026
An interactive reading of Ellen Lupton’s 2006 manifesto, as a print booklet and a website for desktop + mobile.

In 2006 Ellen Lupton asked every type foundry to give away one great typeface. After feedback from type designers she revised her own words: a few foundries instead of every one, a good typeface instead of a great one.

The project treats the manifesto as a working draft that is still being edited. Red strike-throughs, handwritten notes and asterisks carry Lupton’s revisions through the booklet and the site. Online, readers make their own: they reveal her edits, reshape her letters, add asterisks, rename the font, and fill a bag of free fonts that always costs $0.00.
